Is There Something I Should not Mention in my Essay about Religion?

Religion is another one of those touchy topics that’s become hard to discuss over the years. If you happen to be writing an essay on one specific religion, or religion in general, you may be wondering if there is something you shouldn’t put in it. The answer, in short, is yes. Here are some things you should never mention when writing a religious essay!

1. Your religion is the only true religion. It may be tempting to say that your religion is the only one that’s true, but that simply may not be the case. There are hundreds of religions out there, and any of them could be true. Saying that your religion is the only true religion out there is simply an opinion, and most of the time opinions are not meant to be put in essays. You don’t want to offend someone who believes in a different religion than you.
2. Religion doesn’t exist. On the other side of the coin, stating that religion itself doesn’t exist is another opinion that should never be put in a religious essay. Religion has been around for centuries upon centuries, and stating that religion doesn’t exist in a religious essay simply doesn’t make a lot of sense. You are only going to insult or offend a lot of people.
3. Bash other religions. Once again, there are hundreds of religions out there, and there are people of those religions who have done terrible things. Before stating “look how horrible this religion is!” remember that there was probably a time where people of your religion did some questionable things too.
4. Stick to just your religion. When talking about, say, Christianity, you might be tempted to talk about just that religion. Instead, acknowledge other religions, and compare what makes them different and how they are alike. Talk about the origins, which religion did yours stem from, and why? Every religion has a story, and most likely that religion stemmed from another religion.

When writing an essay on religion, it is very important to use these tips. You have to be extremely careful these days on what you write about. Philosophy class is about opinions, yes, but it’s also about opening your mind to new ideas and critically thinking. Remember to be respectful to all religions, and respectfully argue against others. If you remember these four things, your religious essay will come out perfect!
